Purpose
Greene Township has developed this page to help residents understand regulations, policies and practices regarding the identification of Special Flood Hazard (SFH) Areas, more commonly known as floodplain. The SFH Areas within the Township are shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) which have been prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Am I in the floodplain or SFH Area?
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has developed a tool for residents to see if they are in an area with potential flooding concerns: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home
I’m in the floodplain….what permits do I need if I have a project in mind?
A Land Use Permit would be required for any development within the SFH Area. This would include improvement to a dwelling such as re-roofing, siding, window replacement, interior renovations, etc.
Development is defined as: Any man-made change to improved or unimproved real estate, including but not limited to the construction, reconstruction, renovation, repair, expansion, or alteration of buildings or other structures; the placement of manufactured homes; streets and other paving; utilities; filling, grading and excavation; mining; dredging; drilling operations; storage of equipment or materials; and the subdivision of land.
In addition to a Township Land Use Permit, a Building Permit issued by our Building Code Official (Pa Municipal Code Alliance, https://pacodealliance.com/ may also be required.
Construction cannot commence until all permits have been issued. Please contact the Greene Township Zoning Officer, Dan Bachman at (717) 263-4990 or dbachman@greenetwp.us with any questions you may have regarding permitting.
